The Evolution of my interest in GIS

Studying Geography gives a different perspective of how we see the world. We can learn about spatial relationships, topographical patterns and about the ecosystem.

Back in 2017 when I was a Geography student, I started seeing maps as living examples- layers of data that tell the story of our environments, our cities and our future. My journey into the world of GIS was not just a career but a natural evolution of how I view the world.

Studying Geography gives a different perspective of how we see the world. We can learn about spatial relationships, topographical patterns and about the ecosystem. But the true moment happened when I realised that I didn’t just want to study about these. I wanted to analyze them, make maps out of them for visual representation and to solve them. The ability to take complex, real world problem and visualize them through data was addictive and fun. What truly inspired me to join this field was its impact on governance and infrastructure. Seeing how spatial data can be used for resource allocation, manage disaster response and helps in Government department works has made me more interested in this field of GIS. This field of GIS is constantly evolving with new methods. Over the recent years its demand has increased in India. In Assam also the demand for GIS professionals has increased very rapidly. GIS entered Assam primarily to address its unique geographical challenges, specifically flood management, natural resource mapping and infrastructure development. The technology evolved from manual map interpretation to advanced cloud based and AI driven spatial analysis. The Assam Remote Sensing Application Centre (ARSAC) established under the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) has been active in Remote Sensing and GIS since 1988.  Initially it focused on natural resource management. For example, using high resolution satellite imagery to create detailed maps of agricultural land, forest cover and water body.

In the recent years, the focus is more given to convert existing paper based, non coordinate maps into GIS digital formats. Likewise The Directorate of Geology and Mining initiated projects in 2022 to make maps of mining sites into digital GIS formats. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority developed a GIS- based Emergency Management Information System. The Guwahati Smart City projects uses GIS to integrate departments (revenue, police, water) into central GIS server for monitoring city services. In 2025, the GIS GeoHub Portal has been launched by the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, this platform serves as centralized hub for data driven governance.
