Though his academic journey took him across India—earning a degree in Geography from Osmania University and a Master’s with a specialized focus on GIS from Andhra University— Kunal’s focus remained on the landscape he called home. He saw how the world was being reshaped by spatial data, yet he noticed a gap in the specialized training available in Northeast India.
With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, real-world projects, and modern geospatial tools, GRED prepares students to work in government agencies, private industries, research institutions, and environmental organizations.
Driven by the belief that the future of development lies in Geoinformatics, Kunal returned to Guwahati. He didn’t just bring back a degree; he brought a vision to establish a center of excellence that could rival any national institute.
The journey began humbly. With just four students who shared his belief, Kunal launched the first batch. It was an intensive, hands-on experiment in bridging the gap between academic theory and industry reality.
Today, the GRED Institute celebrates a milestone of 100 graduates. These alumni are no longer just students; they are the GIS analysts, Remote Sensing specialists, and urban planners driving the modernization of Assam and beyond.
No vision is realized in isolation. While Kunal Rao provided the roadmap, the flourishing environment at GRED was cultivated by a dedicated circle of individuals. We extend our deepest credit and gratitude to those who stood by the institute’s mission:
